When people picture Lapland, they often imagine deep snow, sparkling trees and a world of winter magic. That snowy wonderland is getting closer in November—but nature decides exactly when it arrives.
November is the quiet transition between autumn and winter. At Aurora Village, we like to call it a month of transformation: peaceful, atmospheric and wonderfully unpredictable.
November in Lapland: quick answer
Snow is likely in Ivalo during November, but it is never guaranteed. Some years winter activities begin early in the month; in other years, safe snow conditions arrive much later. Northern Lights viewing, peaceful nature, local food and relaxation remain part of the experience whenever weather conditions allow.
What is November really like in Ivalo?
November weather in Finnish Lapland can vary considerably from one year to another. Winter may arrive early and cover the landscape in white at the beginning of the month. In other years, lasting snow comes much later.
Temperatures generally fall, daylight becomes shorter and the surroundings grow wonderfully still. Frost, fresh snowfall and mild periods can all occur during the same month.
Most years, we expect to have snow at some point in November—but it cannot be guaranteed.

When have our snowmobile tours started?
Our own snowmobile season illustrates how much conditions can vary. At Aurora Village, our first tours began on:

In the exceptional winter of 2018, tours could not begin until 5 December. These dates show why it is difficult to promise an exact start to the winter season.
Are winter activities available in November?
Snow-based experiences such as snowmobiling, husky sledding and reindeer sleigh rides depend on sufficient snow and safe operating conditions. They may already be available during your visit, begin at short notice or need to be adapted if winter has not fully arrived.
Our team monitors the weather and trail conditions every day. We always tell our guests honestly what is possible and help them make the most of the prevailing conditions.
If experiencing every traditional winter activity is essential to your holiday, November may involve too much uncertainty. If you enjoy quiet surroundings, changing landscapes and the excitement of watching winter arrive, it can be a beautiful time to visit.

How often have we seen the Northern Lights in November?
November brings long, dark nights to Ivalo, creating many hours when the Northern Lights may be visible. An aurora sighting still requires solar activity, sufficient darkness and a break in the cloud cover—so no individual night can be guaranteed.
